Family

Family is an interesting concept.
It's interesting because it means so many different things to different people.
For me, family can come in many forms - I don't believe that you need to be blood related to be family, and I don't think that being blood related automatically makes you family.
Let me pump the breaks for a second here; when I say family here, I'm thinking conceptually, not literally, because no I can't change the fact that my mother gave birth to me, and it's not like I can just, for example, say she's not my mom because I don't like her.

I understand my argument is semantic, but I also think that it is real, because I consider some of the friends I have made over the years to be better family than my blood relatives.  I simply want to make the point that we can't always choose our family, but we definitely still can befriend those who are there for us more often than any of our blood relatives ever would be.

In my opinion, this is an important concept to understand early on.  Of course, we all must learn our lessons on our own time in our own way, but knowing what people are capable of (good and bad), is such a valuable tool.  I was very naive to this up until my freshman year of college when I realized just how mean a person could be.  I'll spare the details but long story short I was hurt emotionally, in a very bad way.  Having your guard down around those people who love and support you is also valuable, but easily taken advantage of in the wrong situation, which is why so many trust issues exist.

Every relationship is different, but you must solidify the relationships you have with everyone in your family, because doing anything alone is a horrible feeling.  Nobody got anywhere without the help of someone else, and who else better to support us than people who care to see us succeed.

Here is a sentimental article to support my claims about family.
